Required Practicals Flashcards
Specific Heat Capacity
Determine the specific heat capacity of a material.
Specific Heat Capacity - Steps.
- Measure the mass of the block.
- Put water in the hole with the thermometer.
- Find the temperature change.
- Calculate the specific heat capacity.
- Repeat and calculate the mean.
Resistance
Use circuit diagrams to set up an appropriate circuit to investigate how length affects the resistance of an electrical circuit.
Resistance - Steps.
- Set up and use crocodile clips to complete the circuit using the wire.
- Measure the length of the wire.
- Record the reading on the ammeter and voltmeter.
- Calculate the resistance.
- Repeat steps with different lengths.
- Plot a graph.
V/I Characteristics
Use circuit diagrams to investigate the I-V characteristics of variety a of circuit elements, at constant temperature.
V/I Characteristics - Steps.
- Set up the circuit.
- Turn the power supply up until the potential difference is 12v.
- Take the voltmeter and ammeter readings.
- Calculate the resistance of the lamp at its running temperature.
- Repeat for different values of potential difference.
- Plot a graph.
Density
Use appropriate apparatus to make and record the measurements needed to determine the densities of regular and irregular solid objects and liquids.
Density - Steps.
- Measure the mass of both objects.
- Measure the volume of the regular object.
- Measure the volume of the irregular object (by displacement).
- Calculate Density.
Thermal Insulation
Investigate the effectiveness of different materials as thermal insulators and the factors that may affect the thermal insulation properties of a material.
Thermal Insulation - Steps.
- Put the small beaker inside of the large beaker.
- Boil water and put 80ml of it in the small beaker.
- Use a piece of cardboard, with a hole, as a lid for the large beaker
- Insert the thermometer in the hole.
- Record the temperature and start the stopwatch.
- Record the temperature of the water every 3 minutes.
- Repeat using different materials to fill the space between the large and small beaker.
- Plot a graph.
