equipment:
place a small beaker inside a larger beaker
boil water and measure / pour 80cm^3 into the small beaker
place a lid over both beakers, ensuring there is a hole where a thermometer can be placed
place a thermometer through the lid into the hot water and record a starting temperature and start a stop watch / timer
record the temperature every 3 minutes (until the timer reaches 15 minutes) - utilising the stop watch to help you
repeat the experiment with the same volume of hot water and same starting temperature, changing the insulating material between the two beakers every experiment (some example materials include air (no material), bubble wrap, cotton wool and polystyrene) - same mass of material
independent variable: type of insulation
dependent variable: change in temperature
controlled variable: volume of water, mass of insulating material, starting temperature etc…
