Required practical, Making salts Flashcards
What is the aim of the practical?
To make a soluble salt by using an an acid.
What does crystalised copper sulfate look like?
Blue crystals
What does copper oxide look like?
Black powder
What equipment do you need?
Beaker, gauze, tripod, Bunsen burner, heatproof mat, spatula, glass rod, filter paper, funnel. evaporating basin.
What is the first step?
Start with a fixed volume of dilute sulfuric acid in a beaker. This is our limiting reactant. (the acid will run out)
What is the second step?
Gently heat the acid until almost boiling.
What is the third step?
Use a spatula to add small amounts of copper oxide to the acid.
What is the fourth step?
Stir the solution with a glass rod.
What is the fifth step?
The copper oxide will react and seem to disappear. The solution will go blue.
What is the sixth step?
Continue adding copper oxide, if the solution continues to be clear blue.
What is the seventh step?
Stop adding copper oxide if some powder remains after stirring. At this point the reaction has stopped. All of the acid has reacted.
What is the eight step?
Use filtration to remove the unreacted copper oxide
What is the ninth step?
Place the solution in an evaporating basin. Heat gently over a beaker of boiling water. Heat until around half of the solution remians.
What is the tenth step?
Leave the solution for 24 hours in a cool place for crystals to form.
What is the final step?
Scrape crystals onto paper towel and gently pat the dry.
