required practical - making salts Flashcards
1
Q
what is the reaction between to make soluble salt
A
copper oxide and dilute sulphuric acid
2
Q
what is the first stage
A
making of the soluble salt
3
Q
explain the steps of the first stage
A
- start with a fixed amount of dilute sulphuric acid - limiting reactant
- gently heat the acid until almost boiling
- add small amounts of copper oxide to the acid
- stir using a metal rod
- copper oxide will react and seem to disappear and will turn a blue colour
- keep adding copper oxide if the solution continues to be clear blue and stop when the copper oxide stops mixing
4
Q
what is the second stage
A
filtration to remove the unreacted cooper oxide
5
Q
what is the final stage
A
making the crystals
6
Q
explain the final stage
A
- place the solution into an evaporating dish
- heat gently over a beaker of boiling water
- heat until around half the solution remains
- leave solution for 24 hours in a cool place
- finally scrape crystals onto a paper towel and pat dry
