Required practical 5 dissection Flashcards
Why are dissections important
They are essential to completing an understanding of internal biological functions.
For example, heart, fish gills, respiratory system
Name 3 risks of dissections
Biohazard can lead to contamination with bacteria on the body part.
Disinfectant used is flammable
Sharp tools may hurt someone
What can we do to decrease risk of biohazard contamination
. Use disinfectant to wipe down all surfaces
. Keep sample on dissection board
. Put any tools into a pot of disinfectant after using
. Wash hands with soap after
. Wear apron and gloves
What can we do to decrease risk of sharp tools and using disinfectant
Sharp tools:
.Cut away from fingers and from yourself
.Use forceps to hold tissue whilst cutting
. Keep away from the edge of desk
If you get cut, elevate it and disinfect it
Disinfectant:
Keep away from naked flames, and seek out assistance for help
What things do you need to identify in the heart
. Blood vessels of the hear so aorta etc and coronary arteries
. Semilunar valves and atrioventricular valves
. Identify left and right side of heart
. Identify 4 chambers
What do you do with the heart and equipment after the dissection
There are disposable to put the heart, gloves, and paper towels that have touched it
Wipe down surfaces with disinfectant
Put any equipment eg scalpals in a pot of disinfectant
What is a test to see the semilunar valves close and open
Pour water down the aorta and pulmonary artery, and you will see semilunar valves close because these are the valves between ventricle and artery
To open them, gently squeeze the heart to apply pressure, and water will come back out
What is a test to feel the strength of atrioventricular valves
. Look for atrioventricular valves between atria and ventricles
. There will be tendinous cords between them so you can try to put a dissection needle under the cords to carry the heart
If you drew a sketch of the heart, how would you do it
Diagram must have title
No shading or colouring
There must be a magnification indicator
Use sharp pencil
Label structures with label lines that must not overlap
