Question 1

Describe how to investigate osmosis in plant tissue.

Answer 1

1. Cut three potato cylinders of the same diameter using a cork bearer.
2. Trim the potato at equal lengths using a ruler and knife.
3. Measure and record the length (ruler) and mass (balance) of each potato.
4. Measure and pour 10cm³ of 0.5M sugar solution into boiling tube and label accordingly using measuring cylinder.
5. Repeat step 4 using 1.0M sugar solution and distilled water into two other boiling tubes.
6. Place a potato in each tube and leave overnight.
7. Remove potatoes and blot dry using paper towel.
8. Repeat step 3 and record results.
9. Plot a graph with change in mass (g) against concentration of solution (cm³).
