Required Practical Flashcards
what equipment do you need for making salts?
beaker, qauze, tripod, bunsen burner, heatproof mat, filter paper, conical flask, evaporating basin
what are the first 5 steps?
-fixed amount of acid
-gently heat, almost boiling
-add small amounts of metal
-stir with a glass rod
-metal will react and disappear
what are the next 6 steps?
-add metal until some remains
-use filtration to remove unreacted metal
-gently heat over beaker of boiling water
-heat until half the solution remains
-leave for 24 hours in a cool place for crystals to form
-scrape onto paper towel and pat dry
what is a mixture?
no chemicals bonds, elements are easy to separate
what is chromatography used for?
to separate out mixtures
what is filtration used for?
to separate solids from liquids
what are evaporation and crystallisation used for?
to separate a soluble salt from a solution
what are the 2 types of distillation?
simple - separating a liquid from a solution
fractional - separating a mixture of liquids
