What are the most important things to know about Federalist 10?

A
  1. A strong united republic would be more effective than the individual states at controlling “factions”
  2. A large republic will help control factions because when more representatives are elected, there will be a greater number of opinions.
  3. A large republic will be far less likely to have one majority opinion since there is a great variety of opinions

  1. Its writers are anti federalist, says govt will have “unlimited power”
  2. When people give up their liberty, they will rarely get it back, except through force
  3. Strongly opposed to the elastic clause in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution
  4. Strongly opposed to the 6th article which said that U.S. laws are “The Supreme law of the land”
  5. Argues that most of the rights left to the states would be “annihilated” through Article 1 Section 8
  6. Argues that collecting taxes is the “great engine of oppression and tyranny”
  7. Allows the federal government to raise and support armies in peacetime
  8. Solution: Republics must be small, no successful large Republic in human history

What do you need to remember about the Declaration of Independence?

A
  1. All people are created equal, with natural rights of Life, Liberty, and Property
  2. Governments are created to protect these rights
  3. People have a duty to change/destroy when governments aren’t protecting rights
  4. Imperfect government should not be destroyed, online ones that seek to subject the people to tyranny

What do you need to remember about the Articles of Confederation?

  1. This pre-constitutional document had an extremely limited central government
  2. Limitations placed upon the central government made it ineffective
  3. Each state remained its own country
  4. The unicameral legislature, each state got one vote in this Congress
  5. No Executive or Judicial Branch
  6. Not able to raise taxes, no standing armies
