Reproductive Unit Quiz #1 Flashcards
What is the (1) name of one reproductive disease, (2) what kind of pathogen is it, and (3) what animal does it affect?
HIV, virus, apes, chimpanzees, humans, ect.
Why does the scrotum retract and descend from the abdomen?
Thermoregulation
The spermatic cord suspends the testes from the abdomen and contains:
Vas Deferes
What is the pampiniform plexus and what is the function?
Are veins that take away heat
The name for the formation of sperm is
spermatogenesis
Where is sperm and testosterone produced and what is the name of the two cells that make these cells and hormones?
Testies, lydio and sertoil cells
Bilateral and Unilateral cryptorchidism know the difference between the two.
Bilateral = both testies are in the stomach and no sperm in produced, Unilateral = sperm is produced (testasterone is produced in both)
Where is sperm stored in the testes to mature?
Epididymis
Know at least 2 secondary male sex characteristics
increased muscle size and dominant behavior
What does semen provide for sperm?
mobility
Estrous vs Estrus
Estrous is the entire cycle that occurs between heat and ovulation. Estrus is the period of standing heat
What are the 4 stages of estrous?
Proestrus, estrus, medesrtus, diestrus
The quick release of this hormone causes the release of the egg from the follicle.
Progesterone
What does the follicle turn into when the egg is released?
Corpus luteum
What are two behavioral signs of estrus?
allowing animals to mount them and vocalizations
Name the three types of estrous cycles and describe them
polyestrus, seasonal polyestrus, monestrus
what is evaluated when looking at sperm?.. The two M’s
Morphology and Mobility
What are the three parts of the sperm cell and why are they important?
Head (contains DNA), neck (makes energy), tail (propels)
What are three abnormalities that sperm can have?
Large/ Small head, no neck, bent tail ect.
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH):
Causes the follicle to grow in ovary
Estrogen:
Produced by cells surrounding the follicle (brings on heat)
Luteinizing Hormone (LH):
causes the follicle to release the egg
Progesterone:
Produced by the corpus luteum to support pregnancy
Prostaglandin:
produced by the uterus to stop progesterone
