Reproductive Systems Flashcards
Testes
Glands responsible for producing male sex hormone testosterone and sperm
Scrotum
Scrotum regulates temperature of the sperm by moving closer or further from body (relax or contracting)
Epididymis
Coils attached to the testes mature immature sperm, storing matured sperm until climax
When climax- carried to urethra by vas deferens
Penis
Male organ used to deliver semen to female during intercourse, houses urethra which transports urine and semen
Vas deferens
Sperm duct, muscular tube which moves sperm from epididymis to the urethra
Seminal Vesicle
Attached to the vas deferens, pouches produce fructose which supplies sperm with energy to swim and fertilize the egg
Urethra
Tube located in penis which carries sperm and urine outside of the body
Prostate gland
Gland produces fluids that make up semen, supply nutrients to the sperm
Ovaries
Glands produce female sex hormone and egg cells (ova)
Each month from puberty to menopause one ovary will release an egg —> ovulation
Uterus
Pear shaped organ that grows a lining each month to prepare for pregnancy. Lining sheds if there is no pregnancy (menstruation)
Cervix
Connects vagina and uterus and produces mucus. Leading up to ovulation this mucus is clear elastic and slipper. Helps sperm from male reach uterus during sex
Vagina
Canal that joins cervix to the outside of the body
Where the baby passes at birth, where penis enters during sex
Fallopian tubes
Two tubes stretch from ovaries to the uterus, these tubes carry eggs each month
Endometrium uterine lining
Inner layer of uterus (womb). Tissue shed monthly in response of hormonal changes of the menstrual period.
