REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF HEN Flashcards
Produces egg cells (ova) and releases mature yolks for fertilization. Only the left ovary is functional in chickens.
Ovary
The yolk released from the ovary, which will travel through the oviduct to form an egg.
Matured Egg Cell (Ovum/Yolk
Developing egg cells within the ovary that will mature over time.
Immature Egg Cell –
Supports and holds the ovary and oviduct in place within the hen’s body.
Ligament
– The first section of the oviduct where the yolk is captured after ovulation; fertilization occurs here if sperm is present. (15-18 minutes)
Infundibulum
The longest part of the oviduct, where the egg white (albumen) is added around the yolk. (3 hours)
Magnum–
– Forms the inner and outer shell membranes around the egg. (1-2 hours)
Isthmus
– Deposits calcium to form the eggshell. (20-21 hours)
Uterus (Shell Gland)
Pushes the fully formed egg into the cloaca for laying; also stores sperm for fertilization.
Vagina–
– Absorbs water and electrolytes, forming feces before excretion.
Large Intestine
The common exit for eggs, feces, and urine.
Cloaca –
– Non-functional in most birds; only the left oviduct develops in hens.
