Reproductive System Anatomy Flashcards
define polymastia, polythelia, amastia, and athelia
polymastia: extra breast
polythelia: extra nipple
amastia: absent breast
athelia: absent nipple
what are the 3 blood supplies of the breast?
- thoracoacormial/superior thoracic aa - branch of first part of axillary aa
- lateral thoracic aa - branch of second part of axillary aa
- internal mammary/internal thoracic aa - branch of subclavian aa
what are the 3 lymphatic drainages of the breast?
- axillary nodes (75%)
- supra/infraclavicular nodes
- internal thoracic nodes
what are the excretory and secretory parts of the glandular tissue of the breast?
secretory - acini (terminal duct lobular unit)
excretory - duct system
what type of connective tissue is in the stroma?
interlobular tissue is fibrocollagenous and dense, while intralobular tissue is more loose.
fibroadipose tissue surrounding the outside of the lobules
what type of epithelium lines the duct system and acini of the breast? (hint: bilayer)
low columnar or cuboidal epithelium
- luminal epithlium
- myoepithelium
how do you differentiate between acini and adipose cells (both are white) in histology?
acini is surrounded with epithelium while fat cells are not.
what is the anatomical location of the breast?
2/3rd - 6th ribs
sternal edge to mid-axillary line
lies over 3 muscles: pec major, pec minor, serratus anterior
what are the 4 quadrants of the breast?
inferior/superior lateral/medial
- axillary tail of spence is an extension into the axillary fossa from the superior lateral quadrant
