Reproductive System Flashcards
main reproductive organ, makes sperm, secretes testosterone and inhibin
Testes
protective container, divided into two sacs by a Frenulum, one testis per sac
Scrotum
Surrounds spermatic chord, continuing to scrotum; moves the sac vertically (up and down)
Cremaster Muscle
Folds of smooth muscle lining; aid in maintaining temperature, moves the sac horizontally (together or apart)
Dartos Muscle
one per testis, collectively contains all of the arteries, veins, nerves, lymphatic vessels, cremaster and dartos muscles, and the vas deferens
Spermatic Chord
site where sperm is produced; connects to the duct system in the testes
Seminiferous Tubules
Male reproductive gamete, 100 million per ml of semen
sperm
Sperm and seminal fluid
Semen
A network of ducts that contain mature sperm cells
rete testis
a single duct in each testis through which sperm passes
epididymis
stars at the end of the epididymis coming out of the testes; carries sperm to and connects with the urethera
vas deferens
Site of the union of the duct from the seminal vesicle and vas deferens; passes through the prostate; site of large peristaltic waves to propel sperm in to the urethra
Ejaculatory duct
secretes thick fluid into the ejaculatory duct; adds 60% semen volume
Seminal Vesicle
Donut shaped glad under the urinary bladder, secretes more fluid into the urethra, 25% of semen volume
Prostate Gland
Located under the prostate; adds 15% of semen volume, alters the pH or the urethra to be suitable for sperm
Bulbourethral gland
common passageway for semen and urine
urethra
male copulatory organ, composed of erectile tissue
penis
highly vascular erectile tissue; arteriole blood fills, causing the penis to be erect, where blood gathers and stays
corpus cavernosa
lines the penile urethra to keep the urethra open during ejaculation
corpus spongiosum
the enlarged tip of the penis (head)
glans penis
loose fitting skin covering the glans penis in uncircumcised men, ensures moisture and prevents chaffing
prepuce (foreskin)
