Reproductive Strategies Flashcards
Animal reproduction in K-selection: stable environments
K-selection predominates when the organism has the ability to compete successfully for limited resources.
Traits that are thought to be characteristic of K-selection include: large body size, long life spans, and the production of fewer offspring, which require extensive parental care until they mature.
Organisms with K-selected traits include large organisms such as elephants, trees, humans and whales.
Animal reproduction in r-selection: unstable environments
r-selection predominates when the ability to reproduce quickly is crucial.
No advantage in adaptations that permit successful competition with other organisms, because the environment is likely to change again.
Organisms who exhibit r-selected traits can range from bacteria, to insects and weeds, to various small mammals (mice and rats).
The parts of a flower include…
Sepals
Petals
Stamens
Carpels
What are the roles of each part of the flower?
Sepals protect the bud until it opens.
Petals attract insects.
Stamens make pollen.
Carpels grow into fruits which contain the seeds.
How is a flower pollinated?
When a pollen grain lands on it’s stigma.
