What do I mean by a reproductive strategy?
What people who need to breed animals (scientists and pet breeders) do to ensure animals reproduce successfully
What are the four main mating systems?
Sexual promiscuity, polygyny, polyandry, monogamy
What is sexual promiscuity?
Unrestricted mating system, no rule as to which sex provides parental care
What is an example of a promiscuos species?
Elephant seal, rabbit, bonobo, hedge sparrow, garter snake, dolphin, warthog, bee, tipi antelope
What is Polygyny?
One male breeds with several females while a female only mates with one male
What are the two types of Polygyny?
Simultaneous Polygyny and Sequential Polygyny
What species practice Polygyny?
Humans, Gorillas, Elephant seal, baboon, primates, most birds
What are the costs of Polygyny?
Males provide no aid for females, females have to share resources, sometimes imposed on the females by the males taking over the breeding site
