Reproductive Functions (female) Flashcards
What is the function of the ovaries?
To develop and release oocytes/eggs
Where in the ovaries are eggs made?
In the follicles located in the ovarian cortex
Where in the ovaries and how is oestrogen made?
Whilst maturing, the follicle enlarges, a fluid-filled centre is formed, and the follicular cells begin to secrete the hormone oestrogen
Where in the ovaries and how is progesterone made?
Once ovulation has occurred, the follicular cells that remain in the ovary develop into a glandular structure called the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum secretes small amounts of oestrogen and larger amounts of progesterone.
What is the function of fimbriae?
Finger like projections on the end of the fallopian tubes which sweep up the eggs released into the peritoneal cavity from the ovary
What is the function of the fallopian tubes?
To transport the egg from the ovary to the uterus and to provide a site of fertilisation for the egg
What is the function of the uterus?
Primary function is to provide a safe and nurturing space for a developing foetus
What are the three layers of the uterus?
- Perimetrium (outside lining)
-Myometrium (muscular layer in the middle) - Endometrium (inner layer)
What is the function of the cervix?
Usually plugged with mucous until ovulation where this is removed for about 3-4 days
What is the function of the vestibular glands (Bartholin’s glands)?
To secrete mucous to lubricate the vagina and vaginal area
