Q

Describe the roles of oestradiol in the reproductive cycle

A

Sexual receptivity
Induces pre-ovulatory LH surge
Uterine receptivity and gamete transport

Q

Describe the roles of progesterone in the reproductive cycle

A

Can be thought of as an “ANTI oestrodial”

Primes sexual receptivity (e.g. seasonal breeding)
Blocks induction of LH surge
Uterine receptivity and gamete transport
Maintains pregnancy

Q

Describe the types of ovulation across animals

A

Induced ovulators: When a female ovulates due to an externally derivedd stimulus during mating e.g. penis spikes in cat

Spontaneous ovulators: Induce LH surge in response to oestrodial

Q

Describe the cycles in rodents

A

Short cycle with spontaneous ovulation

Split into 4 stages;

  1. Oestrus
  2. Metoestrus (Dietrus 1)
  3. Diestrus 2
  4. Pro-oestrus

Oestrus is when ovulation happens and the corpus luteum is produced

Metoestrus (Di-1) is when progesterone in produced

Di-2 is when small follicles are produced

Pro-oestrus is when follicular growth happens and oestrogen production leading to an LH surge
