Reproductive Cycles Flashcards
What do small follicles produce?
Androgens and inhibin B
What do large follicles produce?
Androgens, Oestradiol, Inhibin A
What does the corpus luteum produce?
Progesterone, Oestradial, Inhibin A
Describe the roles of oestradiol in the reproductive cycle
Sexual receptivity
Induces pre-ovulatory LH surge
Uterine receptivity and gamete transport
Describe the roles of progesterone in the reproductive cycle
Can be thought of as an “ANTI oestrodial”
Primes sexual receptivity (e.g. seasonal breeding)
Blocks induction of LH surge
Uterine receptivity and gamete transport
Maintains pregnancy
Describe the types of ovulation across animals
Induced ovulators: When a female ovulates due to an externally derivedd stimulus during mating e.g. penis spikes in cat
Spontaneous ovulators: Induce LH surge in response to oestrodial
Describe the cycles in rodents
Short cycle with spontaneous ovulation
Split into 4 stages;
- Oestrus
- Metoestrus (Dietrus 1)
- Diestrus 2
- Pro-oestrus
Oestrus is when ovulation happens and the corpus luteum is produced
Metoestrus (Di-1) is when progesterone in produced
Di-2 is when small follicles are produced
Pro-oestrus is when follicular growth happens and oestrogen production leading to an LH surge
