Reproductive ππ½ββοΈ Flashcards
What do the testes produce?
Sperm and testosterone.
What is the function of the scrotum?
Holds the testes and regulates temperature via dartos and cremaster muscles.
What is the role of the epididymis?
Stores and matures sperm.
What does the ductus (vas) deferens do?
Transports sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct.
What connects the vas deferens to the urethra?
Ejaculatory duct.
What is the urethraβs function?
Passage for semen and urine out of the body.
What is the penis?
Copulatory organ consisting of erectile tissues (corpus spongiosum & corpora cavernosa).
What do seminal vesicles produce?
Seminal fluid, which nourishes sperm.
What is the function of the prostate gland?
Secretes fluid that activates sperm.
What do bulbourethral glands do?
Lubricate urethra and neutralize acidity.
What triggers an erection?
Nitric oxide release; erectile bodies fill with blood.
What is ejaculation?
A sympathetic reflex that expels semen from the urethra.
What is spermatogenesis?
Formation of sperm from diploid spermatogonia.
What are the stages of spermatogenesis?
Mitosis β Type A & B daughter cells; Meiosis I β Primary to secondary spermatocytes; Meiosis II β Secondary spermatocytes to spermatids.
What is spermiogenesis?
Maturation of spermatids into spermatozoa (tail formation).
What does GnRH stimulate?
Stimulates pituitary to release FSH & LH.
What does FSH do?
Stimulates Sertoli cells to produce ABP for testosterone accumulation.
What is the role of LH?
Stimulates interstitial cells to secrete testosterone.
What does testosterone support?
Spermatogenesis and secondary sex characteristics.
What does inhibin do?
Released when sperm count is high; inhibits FSH & GnRH.
