Reproduction Test Jan 29 Flashcards
What is the role of the anther?
It is the structure where pollen is produced and stored.
What is the role of the filament?
It is a long, thin supporting stalk in the anther.
What is the role of the petals?
They are brightly coloured to attract insects.
What is the role of the stigma?
It has a sticky surface that captures pollen. It is part of the pistil (female).
What is the style’s role?
It is a long thin stalk that supports the pistil.

What is the role of the sepal?
It surrounds and protects the reproductive organs.
What are the 2 common methods of pollen dispersal in flowering plants?
1- wind 2- insects
What does the term “angiosperm” mean?
It refers to flowering plants and means “closed seed”.
What does the pistil consist of?
female reproductive organs
What does the stamen consist of?
male reproductive organs
What is pollination?

What is fertilization?
when the male and female gametes fuse to produce a zygote
What is a behavioural adaptation angiosperms use to facilitate pollination?
Flowers bloom at night when pollinators are more active
What is the role of bees in flower reproduction?
They carry pollen from one flower to another
What is cross-pollination?
When the pollen from the anther lands on the stigma of a different flower
What environment does a seed need to germinate?
moist, warm environment, with oxygen (light isn’t necessary)
What is asexual reproduction?
reproduction that involves only one parent
What is sexual reproduction?
reproduction that involves two parents (sex)
