Reproduction p2 Flashcards
what are sex cells?
gametes
what gametes do animals have?
sperm
egg
what gametes of plants have?
pollen
egg
what’s sexual reproduction?
mixing genetic info making variety in offspring
(e.g. black cat+white cat=black+white cat)
what’s asexual reproduction?
only involves one parent. no fusing of gametes and no boxing genetic info and mitosis
(also makes identical offspring)
what is meiosis?
the process of forming gametes
what do alleles do?
develop characteristics
what’s homozygous?
2 identical alleles are present
(e.g. BB)
what’s heterozygous
2 different alleles are present
(e.g. Bb)
name 2 inherited disorders:
polydactyl
cystic fibrosis
what is polydactyl disorder?
extra fingers or toes
(caused by dominant allele)
what’s cystic fibrosis?
a cell membrane disorder
(caused by recessive allele)
what can change characteristics?
inherited genes (eye colour)
environmental (dying hair)
both
