Reproduction and Heredity Flashcards
Chromosomes
Tightly coiled strands of DNA and protein that carry tens to hundreds of genes.
DNA
Made up of nitrogen bases, phosphate, and sugars.
Trait
A characteristic of an organism.
Inherit/Heredity
When genetic info is passed from parent to child.
Sexual Reproduction
Reproduction where 2 cells, egg and sperm, create a new organism with genetic identity.
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction in which a new organism is produced from 1 parent and has the same genetic material and DNA of parent.
Genes
A section of DNA or RNA that codes for specific trait.
Genetic Material
The nuclear and cytoplasmic material that determines the function and structure of a cell.
Cell
Basic unit of structure and function of organisms.
Who was Gregor Mandel?
A scientist.
What did Gregor Mandel study?
Pea plants.
What contribution did Gregor Mandel make to the understanding of genetics and heredity?
When he studied pea plants, he discovered the basic laws of genetics.
Asexual Reproduction disadvantages
- No variation
- Genetically identical, so if the environment changes they won’t be able to adapt
- Becomes deadly
Asexual Reproduction advantages
- Less energy
- Faster
- Many offspring produced
Sexual Reproduction advantage
-Allows genetic variation, which helps in survival and adaptation.
