Repro System Development Flashcards
Genotype of embryo
determined at Fertilization
Phenotype of embryo
Indistinguishable between 1-6 weeks
Complete phenotypic differentiation attained at week 20
External Genitalia recognition - Male or Female
By week 12
Indifferent gonads form:
Females = Ovaries - in presence of estrogen and absence of testosterone
Males = Testes, Seminiferous tubules, Rete testes- in presence of testosterone
Paramesonephric (Mullerian) ducts form:
Uterine tubes in both
Females: uterus, cervix, upper vagina
Males: prostatic utricle, appendix of testes
Mesonephric (Wolffian) Ducts form:
Females: Epoophoron (vestigial)
Males: efferent ductules, epididymal duct, ductus deferens, ejaculatory duct, seminal vesicles
Urogenital Sinus forms:
Both: Urinary Bladder, Urethra
Females: urethral glands, greater vestibular glands, lower vagina
Males: prostate, bulbourethral glands
Genital tubercle/Phallus
Females: Clitoris
Males: Penis
Urogenital (urethral) folds/ridges
Females: labia minora
Males: spongy urethra of penis
Labioscrotal (genital) swellings
Females: Labia majora
Males: Scrotum
Descent of Gonads
Ovaries & Testes are intra-abdominally located during intrauterine life
Later descend w/ help of Gubernaculum & Processus Vaginalis
Females - Ovaries:
- descend into pelvis
- gubernaculum forms ovarian ligament + round ligament of uterus
- processus vaginalis forms no adult structure in females
Males- Testes:
- descend into scrotum
- gubernaculum forms gubernaculum Testes in males
- processus vaginalis forms tunica vaginalis testis in males
