Repro Quiz 4 Flashcards
Oogenesis
Formation and maturation of female gamete
- Begins in prenatal period
Oogonium
Potential gamete in a 1 follicle
First step of oogenesis
-Growth of follicle
-Enlargement of cytoplasm
-Zona pellucida
-Proliferation of follicular cells
-Occurs after puberty
Second step of oogenesis
-Meiosis
- Second oocyte retains all cytoplasm and 1/2 of nuclear material (graffian follicle)
- Completed just before ovulation in cow, sow, ewe, and mare
Third step of oogenesis
-Immediately after meiosis 1
-Not completed unless fertilization takes place
- During fertilization
-Meiosis 2 (2 oocyte + sperm cell to zygote + 2nd polar body
Times of ovulation
Cow- 10 to 12 hrs after end of estrus
Ewe- 24 to 30 hrs after onset of estrus
Sow- 35 to 45 hrs after onset of estrus
Mare- 1 to 2 days before estrus ends
When does ovulation occur?
24 to 45 hours after LH surge peak except in mare
Process of ovulation
-LH stimulation
-Enzymes in follicular wall
- Cytoplasmic and nuclear maturation of oocyte
- PGF2a and PGE2 involved in follicular rupture
-Enzymes cause follicular wall to weaken and thin
-Follicle ruptures, follicular fluid escapes w/ ovum
Site of ovulation
Cow, sow, ewe - any point on ovary except hilus
Mare - ovulation fossa
-Occurs at random between ovaries
Oocyte must pass through
Granulosa cells
Basement membrane
Theca interna
Theca externa
Tunica albuginea ovarii
Surface epithelium
What do theca and granulosa cells become after ovulation
Luteal cells, cause by LH
Formation of CL
-Corpus hemorrhagicum
-Corpus luteum
- Corpus albicans (no pregnancy)
- CL of pregnancy (produce more progesterone)
