Countertype
Opposite characteristics to what might be expected from that character type
Archetype
The original version of a character type
Subversive representstion
A really surprising and radical change from expectations
Feminism
The belief that woman should be treated equally in society
Patriarchy
A system where the male is in charge. This is common in most world cultures, the workplace and in politics
1st wave of femenism
1890s —the right to vote
2nd wave feminism
1960s-70s —equal rights in the workplace
3rd wave feminism
2000s-now —sexual liberation and LGBTQ+
Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze Theory
How most films are written, directed and photographed by men, therefore showing women from a male perspective—often lingers on the female body
Hypermasculinity
An exaggeration of masculinity (e.g. when men are shown with extremely muscular bodies, showing their physical strength)
Toxic masculinity
The negative and harmful aspects of masculinity when men try to match media and social images/behaviours of being tough—leading to bad treatment of woman and others
