Representation and summary of data—location Flashcards
What are quantitative variables?
Variables associated with numerical observations
What are qualitative variables?
Variables associated with non-numerical observations
What is a continuous variable?
A variable that can take any value in a given range
What is a discrete variable?
A variable that can take only specific values in a given range
What are class boundaries?
The midpoint between the upper and lower limits of two consecutive classes
What is the width of a class?
The difference between its boundaries
What is the mode?
The most frequent value
What is the median?
The middle value when sorted in ascending order
How can, say, the third quartile be found?
Letting n equal the number of items; if 3n/4 is a whole number, it is the midpoint of the 3n/4 and the (3n/4)+1 values. Else it is the ⌈3n/4⌉ value
How is grouped data always treated when estimating values from it?
As continuous data
What is the mean?
The sum of all values divided by the number of values
How is the mean of a sample notated?
x̄
How is the mean of an entire population notated?
µ
When should the mode be used?
When the data is qualitative
When should the median be used?
When the data is quantitative and there are extreme values
