reporting psychological investigations Flashcards
sections of a scientific report - abstract
first section in a journal article is a short summary
150-200 words
includes major elements - aims , hypotheses , method/procedure results and conclusions
when researching a particular topic psychologists will often read lots of abstracts in order to identify those studies that are worthy of further examination.
introduction
literature review of the general area of research
detailing relevant theories concepts and studies that are related to the current study
research review should follow a logical progression
beginning broadly and gradually becoming more specific until the aims and hypotheses are presented
method
split into several subsection
should include sufficient detail so that other researchers are able to precisely replicate the study
design - clearly stated such as independent groups etc and reasons/ justifications for the choice of design
sample - info related to the people involved in the study such as how many people there were their demographical info etc and also the sampling method used and the target population
apparatus/materials - detail of any assessment instruments used and other relavent materials
procedure- a list of everything that happened in the investigation form begginning to end
includes a verbatim record of everything that was said to participants , briefing standard arises instructions and debriefing
ethics - an explanation of how these were addressed within the study
results
summarise the key findings from the investigation
likely to feature descriptive statistics such as tables graphs and charts measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion
inferential stats should include reference to the choice of statistical test
calculated and critical bivalves and the level of significance and the final outcome
any raw data that was collected and any calculations appear in an appendix
if the researcher has used qualitative methods of research the results/fidnigns are likely to involve analysis categories
discussion
there are several key elements in the discussions exxon
researcher will summarise the results/findings in verbal rather than statistical form
should be discussed in the context of the evidence presented in the intro and ther research that may be considered relevant
should discuss the limitations of the present investigation and this may include some suggestions of how these limitations might be addressed in a future study
spider implications of the research are considered which may include real world applications of what has been discovered and what contribution the investigation has made to the existing knowledge-base within the filed
refercnign
includes full details of any source material cited in the report
