Report to Wordsworth Flashcards
Point 1=
The first quatrain conveys the cruelty of time as nature is losing I’s beauty and essences.
Point 2=
In addition he conveys his thoughts of sea pollution through violent and brutal verbs.
Point 3=
Furthermore, he makes his striking point understood by pointing/ placing the blame on us as the cause of all the destruction and pain in this world.
Point 1=
“smothered smug”
The word “smothered” paints the picture that the earths air is being deprived from the environment, and that nature is struggling to breath and live. In addition, the word smog creates the idea of something toxic, and harmful further emphasizing that its suffocating. The personification truly emphasizes the vivid image, and allows the reader to have sympathy for our environment.
Point 1=
“the flowers are mute”
The word “mute” represents being silenced, and having your voice confined. The word mute also conveys the idea of being paused and still. Flowers links to joy, beauty, and life. Flowers always bring happiness to everything around it. So, the fact that it’s mute is diminished to being powerless, fragile, and stripped of all it’s features that make it so exceptional and bright.
Point 1=
“She has been laid waste”.
By including the word “waste” it sparks images of something toxic, useless, filthy, and unpleasant. By personifying that nature is a woman it allows the readers to imagine someone being reduced to litter and something undesirable which makes us sympathize even more. With the addition of “laid” it adds to the big picture by detailing that it’s been let down, discarded, and given up.
Point 1=
“Like a dying clock”
This simile adds emotion to help give the reader a clear image of how horrific it is to see our nature decay. Comparing it to a dying clock shows us that if things are not being handled with care it will start to slowly wear out and lose everything that made it important. That emphasises the idea that nothing lasts unless it’s cared for.
Point 1= personal response
The description of something as beautiful, heavenly, and crucial to our well-being being destroyed and demolished, makes me feel guilty and mournful. And I am scared that if people abuse the beauty of nature then the description of boey will come true.
Point 2=
“sunk”
the verb “sunk” forms feelings of being anxious, helpless, weakening, and engulfed in darkness. The feeling of actually sinking supports the point of air and life deprivation, its tortures, unjust, and inhumane. Being sunk can be associated with being defeat, and conquered., and in the case on nature all the waste we have laid has cloaked the naturally beauty.
Point 2=
“entombed”
the verb “entombed” ties to being buried and having the forces of life drag you down. It’s the feeling of being trapped, having your air being seized from, and being crushed. The verb creates a vivid image of the power of a God being overpowered by the forces of man’s ignorance and cruelty.
Point 2=
“Triton’s notes struggle to be free”.
This highlights truly being voiceless and not being able to express one’s thoughts no matter how much you try. The image is both auditory and visual. The struggle makes me imagine the notes battling to escape and bring feelings of serenity and peace but is ultimately barricaded by the garbage humans have been dumping.
Point 2=
“Horns are chocked”
This illustrates a picture visually and auditory of music struggling to be free, causing the horns that once played to become voiceless and choked. The image also makes us imagine his horns being stuffed with the garbage we dumped upon the earth.
Point 2= Personal response
It makes me pitiful that the actions of us humans have caused pain and suffering to the creatures of the wild, and their habitats. It’s disturbing how savage it is. And we know that once the damage has been done you can’t take it back
Point 3=
“helpless as beached as a whale”
The simile constructs a powerful image of something wonderful and marvelous as whales have been weakened and restrained of their freedom at the hands of ignorant humans. The whales crave the comfort of their home which has been taken and harmed, the simile also emphasizes the second point of her feelings towards sea pollution.
Point 3=
“Insatiate man moves for the kill”
This adjective further supports the message Boey was conveying through the poem that humans have an irrational lust for possessions, we are so greedy and oblivious by fulfilling our wants we are murdering our planet just like a monster mindlessly hunting for what it wants, not thinking of the consequences. We can never be satisfied with what we have, always seeking for more no matter the cost.
