Repair and fibrosis Flashcards
What are the two distinct processes of repair?
Regeneration and Replacement.
What is regeneration in the repair process?
the replacement of injured cells by cells of the same type, with no residual trace of injury.
What is replacement in the repair process?
when injured cells are replaced by connective tissue fibers, leading to fibrosis.
True or False: Regeneration results in fibrosis.
False. Regeneration does not lead to fibrosis; it replaces injured cells with cells of the same type.
True or False: In regeneration, there is no residual trace of injury.
True
What does replacement of injured cells lead to?
fibrosis
What are the three main phases of wound healing?
Inflammatory, Proliferative, and Maturation.
What happens during the inflammatory phase of wound healing?
Bleeding stops (hemostasis), blood supply constricts, platelets clot, a scab forms, and inflammation occurs to cleanse the wound.
How long does the inflammatory phase last?
Immediate to 2-5 days.
What are the key processes of the proliferative phase?
Granulation (new collagen tissue & capillaries), contraction (wound edges pull together), and epithelialization (cells cross the moist surface).
How long does the proliferative phase last?
5 days to 3 weeks.
What happens during the maturation phase of wound healing?
Collagen forms to increase tensile strength, scar tissue develops, and tissue remodeling occurs.
How strong is scar tissue compared to original tissue?
It is only 80% as strong as the original tissue.
How long does the maturation phase last?
3 weeks to 2 years.
T/F: The inflammatory phase lasts between 5 days to 3 weeks.
False (It lasts from immediate to 2-5 days).
T/F: Granulation in the proliferative phase involves new collagen tissue and capillary formation.
True
T/F: The maturation phase of wound healing is also called the scar formation phase.
True
T/F: The final scar tissue is just as strong as the original tissue.
False (It is only 80% as strong).
T/F: The contraction process in the proliferative phase helps pull the wound edges together
True
