Reorganisational theory Flashcards
The theory
The Crick- Mitchison Theory (aka reverse learning) proposes that the main function of dreams is Reorganisation, in order to improve memory storage. It is thought that dreaming occurs during REM sleep when our brains are turned ‘off’ from perceiving external stimuli. The brain then uses dreaming to go **through information it acquired throughout the day and go through a process of reverse learning to forget unwanted information. According to this theory the brain will retain adaptive memories, things that will be useful to remember, and delete parasitic memories which are irrelevant. **This process ultimately improving organisation and space through dreaming.
Application
If their theory is correct then it could tie an explanation as to why people who are deprived of REM sleep demonstrate abnormal behaviour such as schizophrenia, depression and mania.
implications
This theory implies that REM sleep is required for dreaming to ensure people have a greater capacity and organisation within their brain. Therefore it is important that people are encouraged to make better life style choices to increase the amount of time spent in REM sleep. Some studies suggest that having an alcoholic drink at night, craving nicotine and not getting enough regular physical activity can lead to a reduction or a delay in REM sleep.
