Renewables Flashcards
What is renewable energy?
It is an energy source that will not run out.
What is non-renewable energy
It is an energy source that runs out (finite).
Name 3 examples of renewable energy?
Solar energy, Wind energy and Hydroelectric Power (HEP).
What is Solar Energy?
Solar energy is energy from the sun that is used to heat water and solar cookers or generate electricity through battery cells.
What is wind energy?
Wind energy is turbines that use the energy of the wind to generate electricity, either on land (on shore) or out to sea (off shore).
What is the largest offshore wind farm in the world?
The largest offshore wind farm is off the Cumbrian coast and has over 200 turbines which could power 1 million homes for a year.
What is Hydroelectric Power (HEP)?
Hydroelectric Power (HEP) uses energy from water. Water is trapped by a dam and is pushed through tunnels where water spins turbines to generate energy.
What is the Largest HEP plant in the world?
The largest HEP plant is the 3 Gorges Dam in China which could power 25 million homes a year!
What is a benefit of using wind energy?
Wind energy is a clean fuel source. It does not pollute or emit greenhouse gases.
What is a cost for using wind energy?
Offshore wind farms are built far away from where the source is needed, requiring expensive transmission lines to use the power produced.
What is a benefit for using solar energy?
Solar energy requires little maintenance once the solar panels are installed and working at maximum efficiency.
What is a cost for using solar energy?
Large solar farms can take up land that could be used for growing crops, although the land can often be used for grazing.
What is a benefit for using HEP?
HEP is a reliable and consistent source of energy with very few fluctuations in the amount produced.
What is a cost for using HEP?
HEP power plants can result in the displacement of farmland and villages to make room for the dam and reservoirs to be built.
