Renewable Energy Sources Flashcards
What are the advantages of renewable energy sources?
- Never run out
2. Less damage to environment
What are the disadvantages of renewable energy sources?
- Don’t provide much energy
2. Unreliable due to weather
What are the advantages of wind power?
- No pollution except manufacturing
- No permanent damage to landscape
- No fuel costs
What are the disadvantages of wind power?
- Not much energy provided - lots of turbines needed
- Noisy and spoil views
- High initial costs
- Can’t increase supply
- No wind, no power
What are the advantages of solar cells?
- No pollution but high energy for manufacture
- Very reliable source in daytime
- Free electricity and very low running costs
What are the disadvantages of solar cells?
- High initial costs
- Too expensive to connect to National Grid
- Not much energy provided
How do solar cells work?
Generate electric currents directly from sunlight
How does hydroelectric power work?
- The flooding of a valley by a dam
2. Water flows out to drive turbines
What are the advantages of hydroelectric power?
- Can provide immediate response to increased demand
- Very reliable
- No fuel and very low running costs
- No pollution
What are the disadvantages of hydroelectric power?
- Flooding of valley releases methane and CO2 - rotting vegetation
- Ugly when dry
- High initial costs
What is pumped storage?
A way of storing energy that has already been generated.
How does pumped storage work?
- Similar to hydroelectric
- Cheaper electricity at night used to pump water up to reservoir
- Released during peak demand
How does wave power work?
Waves move up and down and drive generator.
What are the advantages of wave power?
- No pollution
2. No fuel costs and very low running costs
What are the disadvantages of wave power?
- Spoils views
- Boat hazard
- High initial costs
