Renewable energy Flashcards
Name 6 types of renewable energy
- Biomass. 5. Solar. Energy
- Geothermal. 6. Wind Energy
- Hydropower
- Ocean Energy
Examples of Fossil fuels
Coal
Petroleum
Natural gas
The difference between biomass and fossil fuels is…
Biomass is renewable energy as it maintains a closed carbon cycle. This means there is not an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels due to the use of Biomass fuels.
Ethanol is used as a transportation fuel in the USA and Brazil and a few other countries. What type of fuel is ethanol…renewable or fossil ?
It is a renewable fuel which can be made from corn, waste paper and other sources.
What type of energy uses heat from below the Earth’s surface?
geothermal .
Hydropower, produced from flowing water passing through hydroelectric turbines, is mostly produced at large dams.
What are turbines?
Is there a hydroelectric dam in Brunei?
A turbine is an engine that has a part with blades that are caused to spin by pressure from water, steam or air.
There are no hydro electric dams in Brunei, however Ulu Tutong Dam
has the capability of becoming a hydro electric dam in the future.
The production of hydroelectricity from year to year varies with precipitation.
What is a synonym for precipitation?
Rain
What is an OTEC plant?
It is an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion system / plant.
What is a large source of renewable energy that could be utilised more fully?
Ocean energy
What can solar energy be used for?
Drying crops
Heating buildings and water
Produce electricity and high temperature heat
Renewable energy (definition)
Renewable energy is energy that appears to be inexhaustible, that is it is always available or regenerating.
Name 5 reasons why renewable energy will expand its place in the world in the future.
> advanced technologies are reducing costs and increasing efficiencies.
renewable energy has fewer negative environmental and health impacts than fossil fuels.
many renewable energies are able to be produced by the users.
there is strong global support.
many governments are looking for ways to reduce global warming.
