Renewable Energy Flashcards
Renewable Energy Source
These are energy sources that will not run out but are not limitless all at one time, replenishment takes time.
Perpetual Sources
These are resources that are not directly influenced by human consumption
Non-Renewable Energy Source
Sources of energy that can and will eventually be completely depleted after a period of time
Wind Power
Wind rotates wind turbines, which convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Solar Energy
Solar energy takes advantage of the heat from the sun and turns it into usable electrical energy.
Photovoltaics
Photovoltaic energy is energy converted into electrical energy from the radiant energy of the sun.
Geothermal Energy
Water is pumped deep into the earth where it is heated and turned to steam. This steam then rises to the surface where it turns a turbine to then create electrical energy
Hydroelectric Energy
This is energy created by taking advantage of flowing or falling water, the force of which can be used to create electrical energy.
Biomass Energy
Biomass Energy is collected by burning plants, which release leftover solar energy that has been stored in their cells. This energy can then be converted into electrical energy.
Bio-fuels
Different natural materials can be converted into a fuels source to replace unleaded and diesel fuels. The two bigger ones are ethanol and leftover oils from restaurant fryers.
Hydrogen Energy
Hydrogen fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to create water, and during the process, chemical energy is released, which can be harnessed and converted into electrical energy.
Four Main Types of Non-Renewable Energy
Oil
Natural Gas
Nuclear Energy
Coal
