Renee Magic - Unit 3 Flashcards
Lets get it
ASAP
Left sided CHF is:
Pump failure and causes fluid overload.
Most Heart failure begins with what side and then progresses to both sides?
Left
Decreases cardiac output and congestion is caused by failure of which side of the heart?
Left
What leads to pulmonary congestion?
Blood backing up into the lungs because of insufficient pumping. Feels like you’re drowning.
What HF has reduced ejection fraction of <40% with ventricular dilation?
Systolic heart failure or forward failure
What is diastolic heart failure?
When ventricles cannot relax during diastole. Prevents the ventricle from filling enough for cardiac output.
What are varicose veins?
Distended protruding veins that appear darkened and torturous
Thrombophlebitis
refers to a thrombus that is associated with inflammation
Chronic venous insufficiency
the result of prolonged venous hypertension that stretches the veins and damages the valves
Some causes of LSHF.
Hypertension, coronary artery disease, and valvular disease.
What happens during RSHF?
The right ventricle does not empty completely. Can occur without LSHF but not common. Can cause pulmonary problems like COPD.
Pulmonary congestion will cause:
Cough at night, crackles, dyspnea, frothy pink sputum,
tachypnea, orthopnea.
What does digoxin do?
Increase contractility. Know therapeutic levels, always check PR before, during and
after. Digoxin is sensitive to potassium and can cause hypokalemia. Give loop diuretics, most potent. Assess for potassium and digoxin levels. Weigh daily to make
sure fluid is decreasing.
