Japanese Art
The dragonfly used as main image was an important part of Japanese art.
He has also included the muted, subtle colours most commonly associated with Japanese art as contrasting elements within the brooch.
Art Nouveau
Design of the dragonfly brooch reflects the naturalistic influences of Art Nouveau in that the dragonfly is combined with female form.
Also used the flowing lines of the Art Nouveau style which can be seen in the shape and intricate pattern of the dragonfly’s wings.
Classical Mythology
Designs included themes strongly inspired by Classical Mythology, including the Dragonfly brooch as the use of a hybrid creature - the woman, dragonfly and griffins claws all look as if it came straight out of a mythological story.
Enamelling
For this design Lalique used the Byzantine 6th century technique of Pique-a-jour enamelling to fill the spaces formed between the gold filigree wire, producing a realistic, intricate pattern which mimics the wings of a real dragonfly.
Mass Production
Lalique used the ancient technqiue of lost wax casting to mass produce the gold hinges for the structure of the body and claws of his design. The hinges allow the design to be functional and enable to brooch to move with the wearer.
