Renal system Flashcards
Kidneys play an important role in what?
Homeostasis
What do kidneys remove?
Waste products
What do kidneys produce?
Urine
What do kidneys regulate?
Fluid balance
What do kidneys filter?
Essential substances (electrolytes)
How is the formation of urine achieved?
Through filtration, reabsorption & excretion
What do kidneys play an important role in?
Endocrine function
What does the renal system include?
Kidneys
Ureters
Bladder
Urethra
What do ureters do?
Take urine to bladder
What does the bladder do?
Stores urine
What does the urethra do?
Takes urine from bladder to outside of the body
Why do organs ensure that a stable internal environment is maintained?
For the survival of tissues in the body
How many kidneys are there and where are they?
2, one each side of the spinal column
How many layers support and cover kidneys?
What are these?
3 layers
Renal facia, adipose tissue, renal capsule
What does the renal facia do?
Anchors kidneys to abdominal wall & surrounding tissue
What does the adipose tissue do?
Surrounds capsule, cushions kidneys from trauma
What does the renal capsule do?
Smooth tissue, helps kidneys to maintain shape
There are 3 regions in the kidneys, what are these?
Renal cortex
Renal medulla
Renal pelvis
What are nephrons?
Small structures that form functional unit of kidneys
What do nephrons do?
Filter blood, perform selective reabsorption, excrete unwanted waste products from filtered blood
What do nephrons regulate?
Amount of water, electrolytes & other minerals
What system are nephrons apart of?
Filtration
What portion is the bowman’s capsule?
First portion of the nephron
When blood reaches the kidneys for filtration, where does it enter first?
Bowman’s capsule
