Renal Review PSW 4 Flashcards
1
Q
Normal pH. Normal range.
A
- 7.4
2. 7.35-7.45
2
Q
What happens when pH isn’t balanced?
A
damage to proteins, enzymes etc
3
Q
How do we regulate pH
A
BUFFER
4
Q
What’s our buffer for ECF?
A
- HCO3-
- OUTSIDE the cell
5
Q
Buffer for ICF? Buffering capacity?
A
- Phosphates
- Proteins
- Other buffers inside the cell
- Buffering capacity of ICF is larger- can carry more fluid
6
Q
What fluid is the first line of defense when we ingest foods?
A
ECF
7
Q
What transporters allow fluids to go from ECF to ICF?
A
Potassium/ Hydrogen countertransporters
8
Q
Levels of which ion is high during acidosis. Explain the mechanism.
A
High Potassium levels- this is due to the countertransporter K+/H+ which will bring one K+ out of the cell and move one H+ into the cell. - cause Plasma levels of K+ to be high
