renal meds Flashcards
1
Q
what class of medication is lasix?
A
a loop diuretic
2
Q
lasix mechanism of action
A
- works on the ascending loop of Henle
- blocks reabsorption of Cl and Na
- increases renal blood flow d/t increase in prostaglandin release
- impairs Ca and Mg reabsorption
- dilates pulmonary lymphatics (drug of choice for pulmonary edema)
3
Q
why do ibuprofen/indomethacin worsen kidney function?
A
they are prostaglandin inhibitors, thus decrease renal blood flow
4
Q
what can long term lasix cause?
A
- hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia
- nephrolithiasis b/c there is more calcium in the urine
5
Q
thiazide mechanism of action
A
- acts on distal tubule
- augments K wasting
- stimulates Ca reabsorption
6
Q
which class of diuretics are the most potent?
A
- loop diuretics
- thiazides are weaker
- K sparing are the weakest
7
Q
K sparing diuretic (aldactone) mechanism of actoin
A
competitive inhibition of aldosterone
-potassium is retained
8
Q
how does dopamine affect the renal system?
A
- dilates renal arteries
- inhibits angiotensin II
- inhibits ADH release, be aware of increased Na losses
