Renal Function Flashcards
What are the 4 main functions of the kidneys?
-Renal blood flow
-Glomerular filtration
-Tubular reabsorption
-Tubular secretion
Define Glomerular filtration
The filtration of the blood via the Glomerulus from blood into a filtrate called urine.
Define Tubular reabsorption
It the process in which we take materials, such as water or salt or glucose that is filtered into the urine and we take it out of the urine and we put it pack into the bloodstream.
Define Tubular secretion
Active transport mechanism in which we take toxic waste products (medications metabolites) from the bloodstream and we secrete it from the blood and and put it into the urine to get rid of it.
The urinary system is composed of four main components:
-the kidneys (where urine is formed from the filtration of blood
-the ureters (that carry the urine to the bladder
-the bladder (that stores the urine production
-the urethra (that delivers the urine for excretion outside the body
Where is the inferior vena cava located?
in front of the Aorta (on the right side of the body)
Where is the Aorta located?
behind the inferior vena cava (left side)
What is the bean shaped objects that are next to the inferior vena cava and Aorta called ?
Kidneys
What is the tubular shaped object that connects to the kidneys and the bladder called?
Ureter
What is the organ that stores the urine production called?
Bladder
What is the tip of the bladder, that delivers urine for excretion for the body called?
Urethra
What is the primary function of kidneys?
- Removal of waste products
- Acid-base balance
- Retention of essential nutrients
- Water, electolyte balance
- Hormone production
- Production of vitamin D
Nitrogenous waste products from protein metabolism.
What is the funcitonal unit of kidney?
Nephron
1-1.5 milion nephrons in each kidneys
What are two types of nephrons?
Which is the main nephrons?
-Cortical nephorns
-Juxtamedullary nephons
The main nephrons are Cortical. (85% - in the cortex of kidney)
