Renal Disease Flashcards
Common Cause of AKI
Dehydration
BUN:SCr Ratio in AKI Presentation
> 20:1
How is degree of kidney function assessed in CKD?
GFR or CrCl
How much albumin is in urine
Kidney Failure =
End-Stage Renal Disease
What is ESRD?
Total and permanent kidney failure
Most Common Causes of CKD
Diabetes
HTN
Primary Function of Nephron
Control concentration of sodium and water
What do nephrons ultimately regulate?
Blood volume –> blood pressure
What is the glomerulus of the nephron?
Large filtering unit located within Bowman’s capsule
What happens to large substances (proteins, protein-bound drugs) in a healthy glomerulus?
They are not filtered out and stay in the blood
What happens when the glomerulus is damaged?
Some albumin passes into the urine
As filtrates move down to loop of Henle (the descending limb)…
Water is reabsorbed
Na+ and Cl- is not reabsorbed and their concentration in the filtrate increases
