Renal and Liver Panels Flashcards
What are special stain panels?
Uses
Often also referred to as ‘sets’; panels of several special stains (or IHC antibodies) are stained together.
-Speeds up the diagnostic process for particular tissue types
-Several unstained sections cut at the same time as the section for H&E
-Stained immediately
-Issued at the same time (or very close to) as the H&E
-Particularly useful for liver and renal tissues
Liver Panels: Why are they requested? Uses?
Liver biopsies usually requested after biochemical blood analysis (LFTs)
particular stains used to distinguish/ assess specific tissue structures/ features - features linked to particular diseases
Vast array of liver pathologies, including Hepatitis (viral/alcoholic), FLD/NAFLD, cirrhosis, metabolic disorders
Histopathology can also be used to monitor response to hepatotoxic treatment, liver regeneration etc
Renal Panel
What is often combined with this for the diagnosis of a renal pathology?
Renal pathology is an increasingly specialist area
Often requires IHC/IMF and EM in addition to special stains
