Renal Flashcards
Dialysis disequilibrium
- can develop during or after hemodialysis
- caused by rapid decrease in fluid volume and BUN levels
- can cause cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure
- headache, nausea, restlessness, seizures, coma
Potassium rich foods
banana, raisins, tomatoes, cantaloupe, potatoes, yogurt, pistachio
BUN lab values
5 - 20
Creatinine lab values
.5 - 1.2
lab values in chronic kidney disease
increased BUN and Creatinine
hypervolemia
fluid overload - can be result of end stage kidney disease/ heart failure - causes edema, shortness of breath, weight gain, high BP
hyperkalemia
excessive potassium levels - causes changes in cardia rate and rhythm, weakness, increase in intestinal motility
Periotonitis
inflammation of peritoneum; can be complication of peritoneal dialysis; symptoms abdominal pain, vomiting, restlessness, confusion, fever, decreased bowel activity, oliguria
common meds with nephrotoxic effects
vancomycin, NSAIDS (ibuprofen, Ketorolac), chemo drugs, IV contrast dye, Iohexol, aminoglycosides
low oxalate foods
coffee, low fat dairy, bananas, cantaloupe, papaya, broccoli, iceberg lettuce, box choy, peppers
high oxalate foods (to avoid with kidney stones)
potatoes, legumes and beans, nuts, soy, raspberries, spinach, swiss chard, beets, chocolate, processed meats, pumpkin, eggplant, grapefruit
