Social Heirachy.
The ranking system during Feudal times. Pope, King, Lords, Knights, Peasants.
Economic sysytem
Based on who owned the most land. Those at the top of the pyramid had more land, wealth, and power (Kings, Nobles) Those at the bottom had no money, land or power (Peasants)
Political System
Kings and Queens were in charge. They had power over the kingdom and made laws. The Church had some influence over politics.
Role of the Church
The church was very powerful, influencing peoples beliefs, and their daily lives. they also impacted politics, as kings and queens would look to te church for advice and guidance.
Black Death
A deadly disease that spread across Europe in the 14th century. killed millions of people, leading to widespread fear, economic decline and death.
The Silk Road
A network of trade routes that connected Europe and Asia. It allowed the exchange of goods, ideas and cultures.
Crusades
A series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims that took place between the 11-13th centuries. Christians wanted to capture the Holy Land which they considered sacred.
Impact of the Crusades
The Crusades led to increased trade, cultural exchange and growth of cities.
Holy Land
A region of land in the middle east considered sacred by Christians, Muslims and Jews. Most people wanted control of the Holy Land because of it’s religious significance and strategic position.
Famous Crusaders
Pope Urban II : called for the frist crusade.
Richard I (called the Lionheart): Led the third Crusade.
Saladin: Muslim leader that recaptured Jerusalem from Crusaders.
Humanism
A way of thinking that emphasized the individual
and human potential. Humanists valued reason, knowledge and creativity.
Famous people of the Renaissance
Artists: Da Vinci, Michelangelo
Thinkers: Erasmus, Machiavelli
Explorers: Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus
Printing Press
Invented by Johannes Gutenberg. Made books and other printed material available to veryone.
Italian City-States
Centers of trade, banking and culture. Famous City-States included Florence, Venice and Milan
Spanish Inquisition
A religious court established by the Catholic Church to root out heresy. It was used to persecute Muslims, Jews and those who were accused of being witches.
