What did Vesalius do?
He did human dissections and discovered the human anatomy was different to animals.
What did Pare do?
He was a war surgeon. He saw new injuries due to guns and he used hot oil to seal wounds.
One time he ran out of hot oil and mixed egg white turpentine and rose oil which healed people quicker and less painfully.
How did Galen influence the renaissance
Pare brought back galens idea of sewing up arteries to stop blood loss.
What did harvey do
Blood circulates around body by dissecting animals.
Opposed Galens theory of blood being created in the liver.
Was an outrage in church.
As a result of harvey what treatment went out of fashion
Blood legging was stopped and it then influenced blood tests, blood transfusions and heart transplants.
What was quackery
When it was difficult to know what caused disease or what cured it people took advantage and pretended to be wise people but who were actually fraudsters.
Sold useless medicine, or medicines involving opium and alcohol.
What did Sydenham do
He viewed body as a whole.
Close observations of symptoms and diseases.
Physicians must avoid speculation and build up knowledge off Own experiences.
Believed each disease had a unique treatment.
Why was there still a problem with plague
Population rose due to immigration.
More animals than people, streets were like sewers
What does bills of mortality tell you
People bought them often showed their fear of disease.
Similar attitudes to plague?
Both thought arrived from sin and superstitious ideas like astrology , miasma contagion theory
What did government do in plague
Ordered infected houses to be shut , separate sick and non sick in public places and killed animals
Why was hunter opposed
Practiced on human corpses went against church.
Paid gangs to grave rob.
