What does Renaissance mean in French?
Rebirth.
Where did the Renaissance start and when?
Florence, 1350-1400.
What was one of the big changes in the Renaissance?
The basic way people thought about things such as life. In the Middle ages people thought life was supposed to be hard.
How did the people in Florence start to think differently in the 1300’s?
They studied the writings and works of the Greeks and Romans and realised that earlier civilisations lived differently.
What was the new way of thinking called?
Humanism.
What was humanism?
When people had a different way of thinking about life and thinking it could be more enjoyable. They started to think people should be educated and things like art, music and science could make life better for everyone.
At the start of the Renaissance, Italy was divided into how many city- states?
- Florence, Milan and Venice. They competed with each other to be the best.
What was Florence like in the late 1300’s?
It had become a very rich city. Wealthy merchants and businessmen had the money to hire artists and crafts people, art began to flourish.
Examples of Renaissance artists?
Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Giotto Di Bondone.
What was the reformation?
The reformation was a movement where people in the 16th Century began to complain about the Catholic Church more actively.
Who was the first renaissance painter to break away from Byzantine style painting?
Giotto Di Bondone.
What was Giotto Di Bondone famous for?
He painted people and objects as they actually looked in nature and not abstract like previous artisits.
Why did the reformation happen?
Because people began to complain about the Catholic Church more actively in the 16th Century. The complaints led to protests which led to changes in churches all over Europe.
Who led the complaints against the Catholic Church?
A group called the Lollards in the 14th and 15th centuries.
What changed with the Lollards group in 1517?
They were given a new leadership when Martin Luther, a monk in Germany, put up a list of 95 things that he was not happy about on a church door. These complaints spread and became protests. Those who supported these criticisms were called Protestants. They led to changes and reforms in churches all over Europe and this was called Reformation.
