what beliefs about the causes of diseases were around in the renaissance?
The main ideas were largely miasma (bad air), the movement of the planets, an imbalance of the humours and as a punishment sent by God.

He told doctors that they needed to know a patient’s full medical history. Sydenham used his own observations to produce detailed descriptions of a number of illnesses, including the first description of the symptoms of scarlet fever.
