social cognition
refers to how we interpret, analyse and use the information to make judgements about others in different social situations
person perception
refers to the mental process we use to form impressions and draw conclusions about the personal characteristics of people
attitude
a learnt, stable and relatively enduring evaluations of a person, object or issue
the affective component of an attitude
refers to the emotions or feelings an individual has towards an object, person, group, event or issue
the behavioural component of an attitude
refers to the way in which an attitude is expressed through our actions

refers to the beliefs we have about an object, person, group, event or issue
cognitive dissonance
refers to inconsistencies between individual attitudes and their behaviour
stereotype
a process of grouping people into a category based on what you know about them.
ingroup
any group to which you belong to or identify with
outgroup
any group to which you don’t identify or belong to
prejudice
based on a pre-judgement made about someone that results in either a positive or negative attitude towards them
old fashion prejudice
members of the majority group openly reject the minority group and their actions are obvious and recognised to others (white and black segregation)
modern prejudice
a hidden form of prejudice expressed in ways more likely to be accepted within the majority group (calling names)
discrimination
refers to positive or negative behaviour that is directed towards a social group and members (ignoring, excluding)
direct discrimination
occurs when someone is treated unfairly because of a personal characteristic protected by the law
