Context

A

Christina Rossetti - 1830-1894
Born into a family of poets and artists.
Devout Anglican - believed that suffering is from God to help us to grace.
Her faith led to the failure of two of her relationships due to religious differences
Published ballads, sonnets and religious poems; many of which dealt with the theme of frustrated love, loss and death.
Plagued with ill-health throughout her life, eventually died of cancer.
Poem was written when Rossetti was 19 and engaged to a young man called James Collinson
Belonged to a well known group called the Pre-Raphaelites
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group of English painters, poets, and art critics, founded in the Victorian era. They believed art should be as similar to the real world as possible.
