Remember Flashcards
What does the title suggest?
Imperative verb –> creates the tone of desperation and reflects the fear she has of being forgotten. There is anaphora as well considering the word is repeated throughout the first 8 lines
Silent Land
Euphemism –> it can be used as an alternative for her death as it sounds less blunt. The adjective “silent” stresses the loneliness of death
no more
Repetition –> stresses the restrictions that death will place on the couple and the inability to have a future creates the helplessness of death
Yet…
Conjunction –> Heightens the volta when the writer decided that it’s more important that their loved one is happy than having to feel sorrow when remembering the writer hence, it reflects how Christina doesn’t mind being forgotten
remember…sad
The antithesis of the two imperative verbs –> connotes the sacrifice her loved one has to make; how if he wants to remember her, he has to comply with the feeling of sadness
better by far
The writer prioritises her lover’s happiness over her own desires.
gone away
Euphemism –> euphemistically presents death and poet emphasises the distance with repetition in the next line claiming how she will be “gone far away”
What do we learn about the poet from the first 8 lines compared to the last few?
Poet’s more concerned with being remembered however she then emphasises how she doesn’t mind being forgotten
Why are lines 8 and 6 special?
Indicates control of iambic pentameter which contrasts with her lack of control in death.
