Remains Flashcards
“Sort of inside out”
“Tosses his guts back into his body”
Colloquial language
First 4 stanzas filled with familiar language, makes poem sound like a story.
- Almost childish language - speaker unable to process the event in an adult way (maturer way)
“Tosses” - casual/cold action; no respect for the dead man; makes it sound as if his body was a piece of rubbish
“It rips through his life”
“His blood-shadow stays on the street”
Graphic imagery
Violet metaphor contrasts shockingly with the colloquial style (not formal) of the beginning of the poem
Visual reminder of the death, foreshadows that this death will haunt him
“Probably armed, possibly not”
Repetition
Repetition reflects the way the killing is repeated in his mind
There’s doubt here, contrasts with the definite action that follows
Repeated line in line 4 and 22 - shows he’s replaying the event in his mind and hints at his inner turmoil
